Believing: The Don Sutton Story
By Michael Aun, FIC, LUTCF, CSP, CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame
When we write of the "Magic of Believing", there are a number of sports stories that come to mind about a number of different athletes that have changed their lives with a small change in their attitudes about their lives. One such athlete was Don Sutton, the pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who some say was one of the greatest pitchers in baseball in the seventies. Don Sutton was losing badly earlier in his career. In fact, he lost 12 straight games. He couldn't figure out what was wrong. At the advice of a teammate, he went to a hypnotist in Los Angeles, Dr. Charles Allen. Dr. Allen called him in and asked him "Don, what's the matter?" Sutton responded, "I can't figure it out doctor. I'm losing every time I go to the mound. I've lost 12 straight games. I should be winning but I'm losing." Sutton went on to lay out an endless repetition of negative thoughts about himself. Dr. Allen put Sutton in a trance and asked him to say all the positive things he could say about Don Sutton the pitcher. "And while you're in the trance," said the doctor, "take your thumb and your forefinger and put it ever so slightly together and that's going to remind you of all the positive things you have to say about yourself." That's exactly what he did. In the trance, Don Sutton got on the positive, started talking about his curve ball, the faith that his manager had in him, and all the good things he could think of about the LA Dodgers. To make a long story short, Don Sutton went out and began to win. Each time he'd get on the mound, he'd touch his thumb to his forefinger and a rush of positive thoughts would come to mind. He won 15 of the next 16 ball games and took his teammates to the World Series. You might say that this is a slight thing, suggesting positive thoughts instead of negative thoughts, but you can be sure of this; if it happens in the brain, it has geometrical consequences. It is purely astronomical what can happen when the brain instills a change. If you are willing to exert a billionth of a volt in terms of you attitude, you can change your life. Many of those who are reading this article are just that close to greatness. If you'll only but view yourselves in a different perspective, then greatness will come to you. In other words, lean towards the positive.
