Winners: Could Belichick Be the Greatest Coach Ever?

My dear friend and attorney, the departed Craig Kelly, must have been enjoying the view from heaven a couple of weeks ago…

On CBS television, the late agent's former client, future Hall of Fame coach Bill Belichick, was basking in the glory of a 21-12 victory over the San Diego Chargers, running his team's record to an unprecedented 18-0.

Three hours later, another of Craig's clients, Hall of Fame standout linebacker, Harry Carson, presented the New York Giants with the NFC Championship trophy after the G-men thumped sentimental favorite Green Bay 23-20 in overtime.

Craig had to be feeling pretty good about his legacy. After all, he has represented hundreds of athletes and coaches over the years and always seemed to have somebody in a Super Bowl.

I've had the privilege to attend a couple of Super Bowls as a guest of Craig's. The last one I went to was the San Francisco's thumping of the San Diego Chargers in Miami in 1995. Interestingly, one of the players on that Charger team 13 years ago was linebacker Junior Seau.

Seau was the fifth overall pick in the 1990 draft out of Southern Cal, and he played 13 years for the Chargers. In that 1995 game, his teammates lost to Joe Montana and Jerry Rice by a lopsided 49-26 score, despite having 11 tackles himself.

Seau made just one more postseason appearance with the Chargers and then went to Miami where he missed the playoffs for three consecutive years, the last two of which were spent on injured reserve. Finally, he announced his retirement before the 2006 season. The Chargers threw him a big retirement party.

Three days later, Patriots coach Bill Belichick called. "It wasn't an assistant coach; it wasn't anyone in the PR department. Belichick called," recalls Seau.

"He said, 'I've got a position for you.' He didn't say, 'Would you like to come and play?' He said, 'I have a position for you.'

"That's the world champion coach calling a guy that had just gotten in surfing. I'm going to answer that call," Seau said. "I'm going to answer that call."

As a result, Junior Seau is going back to the Super Bowl with New England on February 3 in Glendale, Arizona. Seau has a shot at immortality, not just a Super Bowl. If New England wins, they will be the only team in history to go 19-0, matching the undefeated season posted by the 1972 Miami Dolphins, who went 17-0.

If they win, you could arguably say this New England team is the greatest to have ever played the game, but I suspect the G-men will have something to say about that on Sunday. I'm pulling for New England because my friend Craig would want me to. Craig passed away several years ago.

Craig reminded me a lot of Belichick himself. The pair looked a lot alike and their demeanor is a mirror image of one another. Always low-key and never caring what others thought of them, both men were soft-spoken and casual. Belichick is often demonized as being the "Darth Vader" of he NFL. Nothing could be further from the truth. The couple of times I met him he was quiet and unassuming and always a gentlemen.

Belichick has been called a genius by the media and even his peers. I think he's just a guy who knows how to read people. He took Junior Seau when everybody else had cast him aside as being too old to play the game. No fewer than ten Patriot players have in excess of ten years of experience led by Seau's 18 years in the business.

Belichick saw something in the 39-year old Seau that no other coach in the NFL saw. He took a "castoffs" like Randy Moss and made him the NFL's top receiver this year. Even his other two linebackers, Mike Vrabel (32) and Teddy Bruschi (34) are old men by NFL standards. Those are just some of the many reasons why Bill Belichick may become the greatest NFL coach to have ever walked the sideline before it's over.
