Humor: Taking the Game Warden Hunting
By Michael Aun, FIC, LUTCF, CSP, CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame
My wife, Christine and I were recently in San Antonio where I had to deliver a keynote address to the Federation of Christian Insurance Agents at the San Antonio Convention Center. While there, we took a couple of extra days as we always do when we travel to interesting places. San Antonio is a cool place to visit and Christine always tags along when I'm speaking there. Not only is there terrific history with the Alamo, there are some other neat things to do like taking the elevator to the top of the 750 foot Tower of the Americas or walking along the San Antonio River Walk, which recently added over a mile of additional walking paths. The Paseo del Rio, in the heart of downtown, is the pride of the city. Lush green foliage lines the banks of this peaceful, historic river. Cobblestone walkways lead visitors to the river-level restaurants and shops. The river bubbles to the surface on the grounds of the University of the Incarnate Word and flows to downtown and beyond, threading its way through the city one level below the hustle and bustle of city streets. It was first called Yanaguana by the Payaya Indians, meaning "place of refreshing waters." Along the horseshoe shaped river bend, the water is shaded by towering cypresses, oaks and willows and bordered by gardens of flowering ornamental plants. River cruisers travel the River Walk's three miles past unique retail shops, restaurants and nightclubs. Christine took me out for lunch at Hooters in the River Walk Mall. Going to Hooters with your wife is closely akin to taking the Game Warden hunting. Hooters Restaurant is a very interesting eatery. Normally, it wouldn't have been my first choice to take my bride, but it was her first choice because the food is so good. Never one to stand in the way of my wife's choice of restaurants (much), I begrudgingly entered the confines of the San Antonio Hooters in the River Walk Mall. Since I don't normally frequent Hooters, I have to assume that the babes on duty that day were typical of all Hooters Restaurants. They all looked great when I walked in, but got prettier by every Corona I consumed. Goodness gracious, any goodwill I established by addressing the audience of Christians in Insurance was completely negated on my Hooter's visit. Thank God we Catholics have this thing called confession. I can only justify it all by saying that it was my wife's idea to go. While enjoying some chicken wings I got a kick out of all the cool stuff on the walls at Hooters as well as the other goings on. The biggest riot of all was the Hooters Bachelor Song, which the ladies on duty bestowed upon the latest guy who was about to bite the dust that week. "Hooters have a single man 'bout to wear a wedding band. Soon he's gonna tie the knot; that's too bad 'cause he's so hot. Sound-off too bad; sound-off so sad; too bad… so sad… look at what you could have had!" As I licked my fingers clean of barbeque sauce, my waitress brought me some hand wipes which were a hoot themselves. Each wipe had a different slogan on the back of it. "Never moon a werewolf."
So next time you're in San Antonio, visit my newest favorite restaurant- Hooters. Actually, there isn't a bad restaurant along the River Walk and they're all priced right to reach out to not only the tourists but also to the local community which is dominated by folks from nearby Lackland Air Force Base, home of the 37th Training Wing, the largest wing in the US Air Force. "Friction is a drag." "Money can't buy you friends, but it can get you a better class of enemies." "It's bad luck to be superstitious." "If you can't be kind, be vague." "One half of all people are below average." The 37th TRW provides basic military, professional and technical skills, and English language training for the Air Force, other military services, government agencies, and allies. Its four primary training functions graduate more than 86,000 students annually. The wing also provides quality operating support to more than 70 tenant and associate units.
